Municipal Award for Margaret Buist

by Laurie Kazan-Allen

On November 22, 2001, the work of Margaret Buist from Sarnia, Ontario was recognised by Lambton Safe Community Council which presented her with the 4th Annual Safety Award "for her vigorous and successful efforts in promoting occupational disease awareness, and pursuing a world ban on the use of asbestos." Largely due to the efforts of Margaret and her colleagues, ten local municipal governments and the municipal government of Lambton County have formally requested that the federal government ban the mining and export of asbestos. Copies of this request were also dispatched to the provincial government, the government of Quebec and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
