Asbestos Seminar in London
A unique public gathering in London on 16 April, 2002 will offer the opportunity to hear presentations by a panel of asbestos experts from Brazil, Australia, Kazakhstan, the USA, Holland and England. The seminar entitled: Asbestos: International Update on a Dying Industry and a Health Time Bomb will take place at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) from 4-8:30 p.m. Ms. Fernanda Giannasi, a Brazilian Factory Inspector from the Sao Paulo Region, will discuss a recent case in which asbestos gaskets were shipped to the UK from Brazil despite UK regulations prohibiting the use of asbestos products. Other speakers will describe asbestos production processes in Kazakhstan, disease rates in Holland and Europe and legal developments in the UK and in South Africa. There will be an exhibition of stunning photographs by Hein du Plessis, from Technikon Free State, which graphically illustrate the repercussions of decades of asbestos production in Prieska, South Africa by the British multinational: Cape plc. Against this background, the launch of the new book by Jock McCulloch on the history of asbestos mining in South Africa will be particularly poignant. The author will be there to discuss his work; copies of: Asbestos Blues: Labour, Capital, Physicians and the State in South Africa will be on sale at a reduced price during the book launch.
Admission to the event, organised jointly by the LSHTM and the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat, is free. As places are limited, please confirm attendance by email to: Carolyn.Stephens@lshtm.ac.uk
