Summer Showcase: Asbestos Mobilization on the Rise
One lesson that every ban asbestos activist learns is the need for patience. With a few exceptions, progress on ending the use of asbestos, a Group 1 carcinogen, is the result of long-term campaigning, rigorous scientific and medical research, extensive consultations and technological developments. Painstaking collaborations across national borders and subject disciplines encourage new alliances and conversations, which in their turn, impact on asbestos narratives even in countries where vested interests dominate the agenda. All of this takes time.
There is no timetable for success and there are long periods when nothing seems to happen. This summer, however, was not one of them. Online reports over recent weeks indicated a seismic shift in the global asbestos debate. News from Asia, Africa, Australasia, Latin America and Europe reported breakthroughs, with initiatives for improving: access to asbestos-related disease diagnoses; occupational and public health protection; support for victims and their families; protocols for holding asbestos defendants to account; and the eradication of asbestos-containing products from the built environment.
As every victory in the fight to free the world from the scourge of asbestos is to be celebrated, these developments are catalogued chronologically. The news featured below was curated to show the geographical spread of progress made over a 6-week period this Summer.
The Netherlands
July 15, 2026: As a result of a crucial ruling by the District Court of Almelo in the eastern part of The Netherlands, a criminal case against Eternit – formerly the country’s largest asbestos conglomerate – will proceed. The Court decided that the case was not time-barred by the statute of limitations as the limitation period began “from the moment of the death of the asbestos victim…”1
Australia
July 19, 2026: The Guardian Australia reported that assurances to parents in Australia and New Zealand that “asbestos in play sand was low risk unless pulverised,” had not been based on testing by national regulators and was both incorrect and intentionally misleading.2
UK
July 20, 2026: The Office of Product and Safety Standards (OPSS) of the UK Government issued a warning to businesses that they must not “rely on final product testing alone to assure the absence of asbestos in toys.” “Parents should,” said OPSS Chief Executive Graham Russell “be able to trust that the toys they buy for their children are safe.3
USA
July 22, 2026: An expanded medical surveillance program to ensure early lung cancer diagnoses for firefighters was announced in Los Angeles, California. The reason for the screening is the potential harm caused by long-term occupational exposures to multiple environmental hazards including: asbestos, smoke, diesel exhaust and other toxins.4
Brazil
July 23, 2026: Councilwoman Fabi Virgílio from Araraquara City, São Paulo State tabled a motion calling for urgent “studies for the implementation of a municipal system for the collection, transportation, and environmentally sound disposal of construction waste and materials and equipment containing asbestos.” The motivation for this proposal was to protect public health, improve the population’s quality of health and preserve the environment by eliminating illegal fly-tipping.5
Philippines
July 23, 2026: At an event in Manila – Advancing Policy, Surveillance, and Care for Asbestos-Related Diseases in the Philippines – the National Framework for the Prevention of Asbestos-Related Diseases was launched. According to one commentator, the new roadmap “marked a major milestone in the country’s effort to protect citizens from deadly asbestos exposures.”6 Although asbestos use has remained at a fairly low level for more than a decade, it has not yet been banned in the Philippines.7
New Zealand
July 26, 2026: The results of research conducted into the liberation of asbestos fibers by play-sand products during simulated children’s play by a New Zealand team led by Associate Professor Terri-Ann Berry were categorical: “90% of tested craft sands released asbestos fibres into the air during play activities. Some fibres met the criteria for respirability…This demonstrates that the potential risk from asbestos in the product can create a real risk from fibres in the air…”8
Malaysia
July 28, 2026: During a question-and-answer session in the upper house of the Malaysian Parliament, the Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation announced that the sum of Malaysian Ringgit 1.7 billion (~US$416m) had been allocated by the federal government to replace 1,800 km of aging asbestos-containing water pipes. Work on this program will be carried out nationwide between 2026 and 2030.9
Japan
July 29, 2026: The Osaka District Court issued an important ruling in a class action brought by injured construction workers against manufacturers of asbestos building products. The Court ordered eight defendants to pay compensation to 61 plaintiffs, including 27 former construction workers and their families, of over 450 million yen (US$2.9m).10
Indonesia
July 31, 2026: At a meeting with businessmen from the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in central Jakarta on July 31, 2026, the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto issued a stark warning about the cancer hazard posed by the use of asbestos roofing. The President’s views align with those of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Environment.11
Sri Lanka
August 3, 2026: According to industrial hygienist Roy Denish: “The Sri Lanka asbestos crisis remains one of the country’s most complex public health, occupational safety and regulatory challenges.” In 2018, the Sri Lanka Government reversed plans to ban asbestos after economic blackmail by the Russian government. As a result, toxic exposures remain a daily occurrence at work and in residential properties. The danger is exacerbated by “informal labour and unsafe waste practices.” Workers in the emergency response, construction, maintenance and demolition sectors are amongst those at elevated risk of contracting asbestos-related diseases.12
Australia
August 5, 2026: News sources in Australia reported the use of new technology to catch a persistent fly-tipper who illegally disposed of asbestos waste in a Sydney suburb. Using the evidence obtained, the authorities in New South Wales secured a guilty verdict for the criminal actions of Andrew Hughes and his company Ant Civil Pty Ltd.13
Japan
August 6, 2026: A partial settlement worth ~568.1 million yen (US$3.6m) was reached at the Saitama District Court between four Japanese manufacturers of asbestos-containing building products and claimants representing 41 individuals who were part of a class action brought on behalf of 90 injured construction workers. No settlement was reached for other victims, whose claims continue. Since the litigation first began, 13 claimants died.14
Latvia
August 7: 2026: Rudīte Vesere, Deputy State Secretary at Latvia’s Ministry of Climate and Energy, issued warnings to householders not to remove asbestos-containing roofing from their properties without the use of specialist contractors, citing World Health Organization advice: “Do not crush it for paving your paths, do not dump it in rubbish bins, nor use it anywhere else as additional support. It must be properly packaged and taken away.”15
France
August 10, 2026: A peer-reviewed paper by French researchers was published which examined the feasibility of using “an automated framework for detecting pleural plaques (PPs) at the patient level using a single chest CT scan.” A new testing protocol for PPs was devised to evaluate health records of 1,241 retired workers with known occupational asbestos exposures. The authors of the study concluded that the innovative procedure had a “strong potential for automated patient-level identification of pleural plaques from a single CT scan.”16
Rwanda
August 10, 2026: Despite serious financial constraints and logistical challenges, Rwanda’s program to remove asbestos roofing from public and private buildings is on course to be completed by the end of the 2026/27 financial year.17
Spain
Aug 10, 2026: An update on plans by civic officials in Malaga to eradicate asbestos roofing from the city within six years, in compliance with national regulations, detailed the appointment of a specialist firm to use satellite technology to map public and private properties in order to identify high-risk buildings and schools. 18
UK
August 10, 2026: A stunning exposé on the Confront Power website reported on stories by past and current employees of the London Underground who documented multiple workplace asbestos exposures.19
Colombia
August 11, 2026: A paper was published which documented the huge burden in Colombia of asbestos-related diseases. Using data for just one year (2022), researchers calculated that the total economic cost to the country was up to US $1,800 million and that the financial impact of the toxic legacy extended “far beyond healthcare expenditures when productivity losses and quality-of-life impacts are considered.”20
Brazil
On August 12, 2026: A unanimous decision was handed down by the Superior Labor Court in São Paulo, which acknowledged the link between toxic occupational exposures and the deadly asbestos cancer contracted by a worker in a factory owned by Eternit S.A., Brazil’s former asbestos giant. After a wait of 18 years – the 66-year-old worker had died in 2008 from mesothelioma – Eternit was ordered to pay compensation of R$2.3 million (US$441,000) to his family.21
Indonesia
August 13, 2026: Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) categorized as “uninhabitable” houses with asbestos roofs because they did not meet building durability criteria and posed a health risk.22
Kenya
August 13, 2026: The Director General of Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority gave evidence to a parliamentary committee on efforts to implement a national asbestos ban. Also discussed during the session were safe disposal guidelines for asbestos material and the schedule for remediating and/or demolishing asbestos-contaminated public buildings.23
Bangladesh
August 14, 2027: The failure by the authorities to enforce controls on working conditions in Bangladeshi ship-breaking yards was documented by journalists reporting on an accident in Sitakunda on August 14. The co-authors of the paper highlighted the deadly long-term consequences of occupational asbestos exposures.24
China
August 15, 2026: It was reported that substantial progress had been made in the ecological remediation of abandoned asbestos mines to improve the habitat for Giant Pandas in the Sichuan region. Restoration work of the area began in 2010 with an initial three-year plan for work on the 250.93-hectare site. By last year (2025), the project had reached a phase of routine management with local people in nearby communities praising the safer living conditions.25
South Africa
August 17, 2026: A medical screening camp for people from the former asbestos mining town of Mafafe, Limpopo Province and surrounding high-risk areas was officially launched by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba. Local people, including former miners, were screened for a range of asbestos-related diseases. Abandoned asbestos mines throughout the Province pose an ongoing health hazard as remediation work carried out at these sites was inadequate or incomplete.26
New Zealand
August 17, 2026: The Consumer Association of New Zealand issued a media release reporting that a Disputes Tribunal had ordered the retailer Kmart NZ to reimburse a Christchurch family for costs incurred due to the purchase from Kmart NZ of children’s play sand containing tremolite asbestos. The compensation of $15,000 covered asbestos testing, urgent relocation costs, replacement of household items, property remediation and loss of amenity. According to referee Cynthia Hawes, the sand should not have been offered for sale as it “was unsafe, not fit for purpose and not of acceptable quality under the Consumer Guarantees Act.”27
Hungary
August 17, 2026: It was reported that Hungary’s Minister of Social and Family Affairs Vilmos Kátai-Németh had filed a criminal complaint against an unknown defendant who had signed off in 2022 on the acquisition of 400 expensive containerized boilers, some of which were made in China and contained asbestos, a substance banned in Hungary. The boilers were purchased for use in social and state institutions but were never used after an engineering report found they “didn’t meet environmental, electrical, fire safety, and occupational safety regulations…”28
USA
August 17, 2026: During a press conference, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers President Arthur Steinberg called on the municipal school district to improve the oversight of renovations being carried out in schools contaminated with asbestos. After millions of dollars were spent over nearly two years, it was still unsafe for 400+ pupils and 90 staff members to return to Kensington High School.29
Belgium
August 18, 2026: A letter sent on behalf of the European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged international concerns over asbestos contamination spread in Western Hungary by the use of contaminated aggregates for roadways, parking lots and other public spaces.30
USA
August 19, 2026: US District Judge Jamar K. Walker for the Eastern District of Virginia issued a plaintiffs’ verdict in a case brought by a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) against three pathologists who had been sued for trade libel over a publication documenting dozens of cancer cases linked to the use of J&J’s asbestos-contaminated talc-based baby powder.
UK
Aug 20, 2026: It was reported that proceedings brought in 2024 against the Ministry of Defence over asbestos exposures experienced in 2018 and 2019 by 256 Royal Marines and soldiers on deployment in Latvia were settled out of court for an unknown amount. The soldiers were assured that further damages could be obtained “should any of those in the claim go on to develop asbestos-related diseases.”31
New Zealand
August 20, 2026: WORKSAFE – “New Zealand’s primary work health and safety regulator” – issued a public safety reminder regarding the use of high-pressure water spraying or compressed air on asbestos-containing materials such as asbestos roofing often found on domestic properties, sheds and garages as well as on agricultural structures.32
Italy
August 21, 2026: Media in Italy reported that the Ministry of Health had sent out alerts regarding the sale in Italy of EU recalled children’s products including: a stretchy carrot toy and Feel Better Buddy Voodoo Magic stretchy puppets, all of which were: marketed under the Trendhaus brand, contained tremolite asbestos-contaminated sand and were made in China.33
Brazil
August 24, 2026: Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) began an investigation into possible asbestos contamination of cosmetics following numerous successful court cases in the US against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over sales of talc-based baby powder. Depending on the information received, the PPO could hold a public or technical hearing pursuant to opening a civil inquiry.34
New Zealand
August 25, 2026: According to Ian Shaw, Emeritus Professor of Toxicology at Canterbury University, New Zealand, people who were exposed to asbestos-contaminated play sand should receive regular medical check-ups. This advice was given in relation to the scandal over sales of toxic children’s play sand by retail outlets and online portals. The results of scientific research conducted in New Zealand revealed that the sand contained tremolite asbestos and that just playing with the sand was enough to liberate carcinogenic fibers.35
Canada
August 25, 2026: Asbestos contamination was recently discovered in soil samples from a former industrial site owned by General Motors in St. Catharines, Southern Ontario. Local people as well as regional councilors were critical of the failure by Niagara Region Public Health and local officials to address the contamination issue. Attempts by members of the public to access information about the extent of the pollution at the 55-acre site next to downtown St. Catharines were continually thwarted.36
Turkey
August 26, 2026: The considerable societal burden of asbestos-related lung cancer on the Turkish population was documented in an August 2026 online publication on the Lung Cancer Journal homepage. A decades-long study of a cohort in rural Turkey showed that environmental asbestos exposures were “associated with a >4-fold increase in lung cancer mortality.” The co-authors of the paper recommended “incorporating environmental asbestos exposure into risk assessment, surveillance, and low-dose computed tomography screening strategies in endemic regions.”37
Australia
August 26, 2026: Figures released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare noted that in 2025, 627 cases of mesothelioma had been reported to the Australian Mesothelioma Registry (AMR); likely asbestos exposures were assessed in 90% of those diagnosed and the median age at diagnosis was 78 years. The estimated health system expenditure for mesothelioma cases in 2023–2024 was A$48.6 million (US$35m) [total cancers A$19.7 billion (US$14bn)].
Brazil
August 27, 2026: The latest figures released by Eternit, S.A. – Brazil’s only remaining asbestos producer – for the first and second quarters (Q) of 2026 revealed that the company’s chrysotile mining sector is facing “intense pressure and compressing profit margins.” Annual chrysotile production estimates for 2026 were 172,000-176,000 tonnes. In Q1, lower chrysotile export volumes contributed to a 6.5% decrease in net revenue while in Q2 a 30.2% fall in chrysotile revenue contributed to a ~77% decline in gross profit.38
Japan
On August 27, 2026, Presiding Judge Sonoe Taniguchi of the Tokyo High Court rejected an appeal from the Japanese Government and ruled that “the statute of limitations should be calculated from the time of death, not from the onset of symptoms.” The government was ordered to pay 13 million yen (US$81,200) compensation to the family of an insulation worker who died in 2004 from mesothelioma.39
Belgium
August 28, 2026: According to data provided at the request of Flemish MP Gianna Werbrouck, in 2026 173 schools in Flanders applied for subsidies for asbestos removal costs. This is nearly twice as many as last year. Asbestos audits remain outstanding for 6,000 Flemish schools. In 2025, the Flemish government announced plans to cover all the costs of asbestos removal from schools. The deadline for eradicating the asbestos hazard from the educational infrastructure of Flanders is 2030.40
Brazil
August 30, 2026: A high-profile column by the prominent Brazilian political and nvestigative journalist Lauro Jardim highlighted the launch of a new class action against Saint-Gobain, one of Brazil’s former asbestos giants, on behalf of injured Brazilian workers who are each claiming compensation of up to R$900,000 (~US$176,300).41
Concluding Thoughts
That there has been a paradigm shift in the public perception of asbestos since the days when it was considered a “magic mineral” is undeniable. Even in countries where asbestos use remains legal, steps are being taken to reveal the human consequences and national costs incurred by this outdated and hazardous technology. As clearly shown by global asbestos trade data, consumers are increasingly choosing safer alternatives.42 In 2025, total asbestos production was 960,000 tonnes, ~20% of the 1980 total. However you look at it, the industry is on a downward trajectory. The end cannot come soon enough.
